Zai barely had regained any Revelation, enough to let her see two hundred heartbeats, but she was burning through that. Worse, she wasn’t feeling any replacing it. It was like she was in a desert of Revelation, all of it being sucked out of the world.

And fed to Lumi.

The ship rolled and pitched as she clutched her husband’s hand. He wheezed, his face a mask of pale sweat. He had lost almost all his coloring. He trembled, blood soaking his sweater. The splinter of the mast, as wide as Zai’s small hand, thrust through his body. He was dying.

She had enough Revelation left to peer a quarter-hour into the future for only a few heartbeats. She concentrated on finding the future that could save him. She burned it all in that one moment, knowing there would be no more for a while.

She had three heartbeats.

Future-Ruan kneels over Euddán, waving her hands and chanting, the splinter of wood missing.

“Ruan!” Past-Zai shouted, staring at Ruan. “You’re casting a healing spell on him. That has to be what I just saw.”

“I don’t know any healing spells!” Ruan gasped. “I don’t know Life magic!”

“The spellbook!” cried Zai, it all clicking into her mind. “You have to use Shéevá’s spellbook!”

Ruan’s eyes widened. “There’s a general-purpose healing spell in there. It’s complicated, but I can try it.”

Zai swallowed. She hadn’t seen if Ruan succeeded. Just that she tried. Vounée was gone. Zai wasn’t sure she could return while the hurricane raged. She would have to find her own way to survive, and so would the rest of them.

Ruan stood and staggered down the hallway. She grabbed the wall, gripping it. The ship swayed to the right. Then to the left. She grabbed the door handle to her room and pushed it open. Beyond, the door to Dhaua’s room banged open and closed, not latching.

Ruan fell into her room and out of sight. She cursed.

“Have to . . . remove the . . . wood,” Euddán panted. “But not . . . before . . . she’s ready.”

Zai nodded. “I am going to save you! And so will Ruan!”

Ruan stumbled back into the hallway and crashed into the door to Zai and Euddán’s cabin. The wizardess held the white-bound book in her hand. She took a step forward as the ship climbed a wave. She gasped, fighting for her balance.

Shuom, behind her, grabbed her with steadying arm-tendrils. Ruan nodded and staggered the last few paces forward. She fell to her knees and opened the book, flipping through it. “I need an Igwuti-cursed light!”

“One moment,” Shuom cried. They rushed to the captain’s cabin and shouldered through the door. They dug around in there then a bright light flared. They hurried back, holding the coppelight in their arm-tendril, a Sun-enchanted magic item common in Otfaveew.

“Thanks,” Ruan said, flipping through pages.

“Hurry,” Zai said, grasping Euddán’s hand.

“Yes!” he spat, face a mask of sweat. “I need this out of me. I have to go out there and help the others! They’re in danger!”

“Shhh,” Zai said, stroking his head.
