Damn him, but he could not resist her. Not tonight. He had known it from the moment he followed her into the tent.
Holding her had been glorious, but it was not enough.
Nay, it had not been enough from the start.
Certainly not from the day before, when he had seen his bride emerge from the water, wickedly tempting in all her bare glory. She was the loveliest thing he had ever laid eyes upon.
He looked down at her now, her hair tangled from her ordeal in the woods, leaves and other brambles twisted in among the fine red strands, a spot of soot from the campfire streaked across one freckled cheek. She was beautiful, innocent, and very much his.
He kissed her, softly at first, then more roughly, letting her feel his want in the kiss.
âYe're beautiful, ye ken,â he said hoarsely. âAnd I want ye, verra badly. I canna stay away from ye.â
âGood. Why should you?â she whispered, kissing back with an eagerness that pleased him. âI'm your wife, am I not?â
"Ye are," he agreed, nipping lightly at her bottom lip. God, that luscious lower lip. So plush and full. He might spend all night simply suckling it and feel a happy man.
But there was more to her body than her lips, he reminded himself. Her small round hips. Her full, heavy breasts were almost too large for such a petite woman. He longed to see them, uncovered by her crossed arms. Bare to his eyes, his lips, his hands in the privacy of their tent.
As if reading his mind, she suddenly twisted in his arms and leaned back, her breasts lifting to him as her back arched. âIf I am your wife,â she said with false innocence, her soft hands lighting on his forearms, âthen it is your duty to care for me in all ways, is it not?â
âIt is,â he said formally, his eyes greedily drinking in her form. He wanted to see her. All of her. âOur mutual duty, aye.â
âI am very ready to do my duty, I find, Husband,â she said, her voice low and throaty.
âAre ye now?â He chuckled. âTake off yer shift for me, then?â
She hesitated, then stood.
He leaned over and quickly doused the single lamp they kept in a corner. There was enough light from the moon to see what he wished to see, he decided. What they were about to do, what they were about to say⦠well, it wouldnât be exactly private, he thought, wryly. But it couldnât be helped. He couldnât wait for the castle. He had to have her. Here and now.
He looked at his wife and drew in his breath. She wore only a simple white shift to sleep in.
Now, as he allowed his eyes to finally roam freely over her form, he saw it concealed almost nothing. Her shape glowed through the transparent linen. He could see everything. The roundness of her hips, the flatness of her belly, the pink tips of her breasts poking against the fabric, the dark triangle of hair that lay between her legs.
