Chapter Sixteen
Lacey pushed open the door to the hairdresserâs, and as soon as she entered her baby stirred.
His sixth sense?
Lacey bent down to the carry cot as she gazed with such a well of love she felt teary. Good grief. She was as mushy as the most besotted mothers sheâd cared for as a midwife and sheâd only been gone half an hour. Talk about enlightenment. âDid you miss me, baby?â
Serenity put a cup of black tea down beside her and she realised her mouth felt like the inside of a cockyâs cage. All that rushing around as she tried to be as quick as she could. She could smell the bergamot in the steam. âEarl Grey. Thank you so much.â
Serenity waved that away. âWelcome. All done?â
âYep.â Lacey reached down and stroked Ethanâs dark mop. His hair felt so soft and touchable. âYour mummy has the car all packed. I missed you.â She kissed his tiny fingers. âWere you a good boy for your aunty?â
Ethan burped and Elsa caught the conversation as she started another cut. âHe was fine. Did you see Cameron on your way?â
âNo. Iâm going there next.â She compressed her lips and left it at that. Then she caught Elsaâs look and smiled. âOkay, itâs a bit awkward when a man you barely know has seen you have a baby.â
âShouldnât be too awkward. You guys seemed to get on well at Hollyâs wedding.â There was a pause as if Elsa expected Lacey to say something.
Lacey wasnât that stupid.
An arch look. âWhatâs the story between you and Cameron James?â
Lacey shrugged. âNothing.â
âYeah, right.â Elsa tilted her head. âOn his side, when you went west, he sure was interested in when youâd be back.â
Lacey shot a look at Elsa. âWhat makes you say that?â
Elsa rolled her eyes. âHe asked if weâd heard from you every couple of weeks until we started to ask why he was so interested.â
That was scarily interesting, Lacey thought. âWell. Cameron was very good at the birth.â
Elsa compressed her lips sympathetically. âIâm sorry, Lacey. Iâm rabbiting on and you said you didnât want to talk about it.â
âIâm fine, really, Elsa. Itâs lovely to see you both.
Serenity said, âYou know he took his bottle?â
Lacey looked down. âYouâre kidding me. Wow. You must be good. I didnât think heâd know what to do with a teat.â
âWasnât me. It was Cameron.â
Laceyâs cup clattered on the saucer and some of the tea splashed over the edge. âHe what? Why? Did he ask to see Ethan?â
Elsa said, âHe dropped in here for a haircut and ended up giving Ethan the bottle.â
Elsa continued to serenely snip away on her current client. âCalm down, youâre overreacting. He was waiting for a cut and seeing as how Ethan and he are acquainted we didnât think youâd mind?â
Lacey rubbed her brow with her free hand. What was she thinking? âSorry. Youâre right. No. Of course I donât mind.â Exactly. He did have rights over the baby, who belongs to both of them. âMy only defence is that man makes me crazy.
