Chapter Sixteen

Lacey pushed open the door to the hairdresser’s, and as soon as she entered her baby stirred.

His sixth sense?

Lacey bent down to the carry cot as she gazed with such a well of love she felt teary. Good grief. She was as mushy as the most besotted mothers she’d cared for as a midwife and she’d only been gone half an hour. Talk about enlightenment. ‘Did you miss me, baby?’

Serenity put a cup of black tea down beside her and she realised her mouth felt like the inside of a cocky’s cage. All that rushing around as she tried to be as quick as she could. She could smell the bergamot in the steam. ‘Earl Grey. Thank you so much.’

Serenity waved that away. ‘Welcome. All done?’

‘Yep.’ Lacey reached down and stroked Ethan’s dark mop. His hair felt so soft and touchable. ‘Your mummy has the car all packed. I missed you.’ She kissed his tiny fingers. ‘Were you a good boy for your aunty?’

Ethan burped and Elsa caught the conversation as she started another cut. ‘He was fine. Did you see Cameron on your way?’

‘No. I’m going there next.’ She compressed her lips and left it at that. Then she caught Elsa’s look and smiled. ‘Okay, it’s a bit awkward when a man you barely know has seen you have a baby.’

‘Shouldn’t be too awkward. You guys seemed to get on well at Holly’s wedding.’ There was a pause as if Elsa expected Lacey to say something.

Lacey wasn’t that stupid.

An arch look. ‘What’s the story between you and Cameron James?’

Lacey shrugged. ‘Nothing.’

‘Yeah, right.’ Elsa tilted her head. ‘On his side, when you went west, he sure was interested in when you’d be back.’

Lacey shot a look at Elsa. ‘What makes you say that?’

Elsa rolled her eyes. ‘He asked if we’d heard from you every couple of weeks until we started to ask why he was so interested.’

That was scarily interesting, Lacey thought. ‘Well. Cameron was very good at the birth.’

Elsa compressed her lips sympathetically. ‘I’m sorry, Lacey. I’m rabbiting on and you said you didn’t want to talk about it.’

‘I’m fine, really, Elsa. It’s lovely to see you both.

Serenity said, ‘You know he took his bottle?’

Lacey looked down. ‘You’re kidding me. Wow. You must be good. I didn’t think he’d know what to do with a teat.’

‘Wasn’t me. It was Cameron.’

Lacey’s cup clattered on the saucer and some of the tea splashed over the edge. ‘He what? Why? Did he ask to see Ethan?’

Elsa said, ‘He dropped in here for a haircut and ended up giving Ethan the bottle.’

Elsa continued to serenely snip away on her current client. ‘Calm down, you’re overreacting. He was waiting for a cut and seeing as how Ethan and he are acquainted we didn’t think you’d mind?’

Lacey rubbed her brow with her free hand. What was she thinking? ‘Sorry. You’re right. No. Of course I don’t mind.’ Exactly. He did have rights over the baby, who belongs to both of them. ‘My only defence is that man makes me crazy.
