Chapter 8
Thursday
Five kids! Mrs. Marshall wanted me to baby-sit for five kids! I
didn’t have the nerve to tell her that even at my own house four kids is
the absolute limit before we get another sitter. Instead, I acted like
everything was find. Boy, was I wrong! And boy, am I glad Jessi came
to the rescue!
It seemed as though Mrs. Marshall was starting to make a habit of surprising my friends in the BSC. First Dawn, and then Mallory. Her excuse was the same both times.
“Mrs. Phillips and I have our jazzercize this afternoon, so I told her to leave her kids here and we’d drive together,” Mrs. Marshall explained, looping her gym bag over her shoulder. “There’s bologna and ham and sliced cheese in the refrigerator. Just throw together some sandwiches for the kids and toss a few potato chips and some apple slices on their places. That should hold them.”
The minute Mrs. Marshall and Mrs. Phillips left, five kids appeared at the top of the stairs. Nina was in tears. “It was my turn to ump on the bed, and Moira took it.”
“I’m older,” Moira, who had been briefly introduced to Mallory, explained. “The oldest gets to go first.”
“Jumping on the bed!” Mallory cried. “Nobody gets to go first. We don’t jump on the bed.”
“We always jump on the bed at out houses,” Bryant said as he slid down the banister. Mallory caught him at the bottom of the rail.
“And it’s not a good idea to do that, either,” Mallory said, pulling him off the railing and setting him firmly on the floor.
“Jump! I jump, too,” Eleanor cried, hopping in place at the top of the stairs.
“Be careful, Eleanor!” Mallory wove her way between Moira and her three-year-old brother Tyler, and hurried to take Eleanor’s hand. “Let’s all go downstairs, where it’s safe and I can watch you.”
“No!” Eleanor cried “I jump.”
She jerked her hand away and Mallory lost her balance. She fell against the stair railing, bumping into Tyler.
Tyler, his eyes two big surprised circles, tumbled into a perfect backward somersault to the bottom of the stairs. His body hit the soft carpet but he banged his lip against the bottom step.
Then eve thing went crazy. Tyler cried out in pain, and his lip started to bleed. The blood frightened everyone, including Mal. Eleanor instantly burst into tears. “Mommy! I want my mommy!”
“I’ll go fine her,” Bryant said, heading for the front door.
Mallory, who had rushed to Tyler’s side, didn’t know which way to turn. Eleanor was crying at the top of the stairs, and Mal was worried she might pull a Tyler, too, and tumble down.
Then Moira added to the commotion by punching Mal on the shoulder. “You hurt my brother,” she said. “You pushed him down the stairs.”
Mal was overwhelmed by the noise, the crying, and the sheer number of kids she had to deal with. She took a deep breath and tried to take charge.
“Bryant, you stay right here!” Mallory ordered as she scooped Tyler into her arms.
