Chapter 6

While Krista was being interrogated in a dusty room at the back of New Scotland Yard, Perry was sitting in a great deal more comfort in his father’s Whitehall gentlemen’s club.

“It is early for an alcoholic beverage according to society’s rules but I’ll be dashed if I’ll sit here over a pot of tea!” Admiral Sir Henry Fotheringham-Carter leaned back in his deep leather chair. He stared across a gleaming round table at his youngest son. The only one of his children to resemble him so forcefully. It was uncanny to his eyes to see himself recreated in another.

“It is not often I am summoned to accompany you to your club, Pater.” Perry watched a servant carrying a silver tray walk across the richly coloured thick-pile carpet in the direction of their table.

“I have ordered drinks and cigars for us both.”

The two men remained silent while the drinks, cigars and a thick glass ashtray were put on the table. When they had been served each man cut the top off a cigar. When both cigars were lit they puffed grey smoke towards the ceiling.

“I have been assured – repeatedly – by your tutors that you have a brain.” Sir Henry narrowed his light-brown eyes in his son’s direction. “I have never seen any indication of this myself.” This son of his had been the despair of his tutors and professors. They had insisted he had a first-class brain but refused to apply himself. He had smiled charmingly and done exactly as he pleased.

“Because I enjoy sailing but refuse to make the sea my career.” This was not a new discussion between them.

“The Horse Guards!” Sir Henry snorted. “I have never understood your fascination with sitting on the back of a horse looking pretty.”

Perry held his cigar between his teeth and grinned at his father’s disgust. The old man believed there was only one serving force – the Navy – anything else was unacceptable. “Now, sir, that is prejudice pure and simple.”

“I don’t want to see a son of mine prancing about on a horse dressed like a toy soldier!” Sir Henry snapped.

“That will not happen now, Pater.” Perry gestured at his leg stretched to one side of him. He had been schooling an untried horse over jumps. The animal refused the jump and somehow managed to trap its front legs in the crossbars of the fence. Fence and horse had collapsed, trapping Perry’s leg underneath. It was only the prompt action of a groom that prevented further injury.

“I told you repeatedly that prancing around on horses would never lead to anything good.” Sir Henry narrowed his eyes against the smoke from his cigar. It hurt his heart to see his son limping around the place.

“It was an accident pure and simple, Pater.” Perry was tired of this old argument. It would change nothing. His leg was permanently damaged and he had to find some way to live with that fact. He did not need constant reminders of his misfortune.

“We have seen little of you this summer.
