Chapter 13

Iolani

The deep, saturated sounds of the club’s music soaked into my skin, setting my bones vibrating. The rich, multi-tonal sounds had become popular over the last five years or so, as places started to openly cater to a more varied—and not always human—nightlife. Some musicians made ridiculous money by creating music like the song that was currently playing, which held additional tones that humans couldn’t hear, adding a rich, otherworldly sound that called to something inside me, rousing the fae need for excess and sensuality. One billionaire pop-star had gotten rich creating albums specifically for canid shifters with whole choruses that only their doggie ears could hear.

I moved past the bouncers—one human, one other—and took a moment to drink in the sights and sounds, giving free rein to the wounded, angry, wild edge that paced restlessly inside me. Iolani Lionheart was a man to be feared and adored, and damn it, I would hunt until the empty, desperate, black hole feeling inside of me disappeared.

Clearly, I had chosen the right club. It felt new and modern, with less of that old-world haunted energy that some places in St. Augustine retained. The place wasn’t dark, but it wasn’t glaring with disco lights or booming techno overkill like some places I’d been. The lights pulsed with the music at a level clearly chosen to avoid overstimulating supernatural senses. A mix of humans and supes milled about, dancing, drinking, finding partners for the night. The energy around me was chaotic in that way any crowded place tended to be, but tonight, it was what I needed. I needed to feel alive, to feel like I wasn’t alone.

I moved into the sea of bodies and energy, throwing myself into one of the throngs of dancers, eyes closed, moving to the music, letting it hypnotize me. People brushed up against me now and then, drawn in by my looks and my fae magnetism. An occasional set of hands touched my hips or arm to get my attention. I danced with a pair of attractive young women wanting a third. An older man who looked like he was the dominating type. An older shifter woman. A lovely, feminine young man with hungry eyes. The energy inside me built, the need like a hunger. But none of them felt like the one. They weren’t the prey I was hunting tonight.

Finally, I took a break from dancing, forging my way to the raised bar in the center of the floor, which had an amazing view of several dancers on platforms scattered about the place. My eyes zeroed in on the nearest one as I sipped my drink. The liquor was perfect—sharp, biting and sweet all at once—but the glass dangled from my fingers forgotten as I watched the beauty on the pedestal. Hair that looked almost black, until the light sparked off it just right, giving away its deep emerald color, clipped close on one side, but done up in long braids on the other. I wasn’t close enough to see, but I was certain those eyes were electric blue with slightly oblong pupils.
