Why was the Ritual Performed?

‘Why did she hold the kufl What was it for?’ These questions preoccupied me after the ritual. The kut ritual for Chisun’s Grandmother had so many layers of meaning that it was, so to speak, like an onion, which has so many skins that one can hardly find the reality. Before the ritual, the reason for holding it did not seem to be very complicated. Soh Bosal had advised Chisun’s Grandmother to hold the kut, saying:

There is no difference between spirits and humans. Spirits are also angry if they are hungry. You need to invite and feed them regularly, otherwise they will be angry. But you have not held a kut ritual for a long time, have you? Once they turn their back on you, it’s hard to make them happy again. Chisun’s Grandfather hangs around you sometimes. Your illness is because you are overdue in holding a kut for him. That’s why you've been suffering from back pain.
