FECAL TRANSPLANT (STOOL TRANSFER)

Food and supplements are the normal way to get living bacteria inside your body, but there is another more invasive method—a stool transfer, which in medicinal terms is called a fecal transplant. However disgusting it sounds, the transfer of fresh feces from a healthy person to a patient seems to be the most successful way to treat serious infections like Clostridium difficile (C. diff). The huge progress with C. diff infections has meant that doctors are now testing fecal transplants for IBS, Crohn’s disease, leaky gut syndrome, and even diabetes and obesity. Stools from healthy donors have been shown to help improve the insulin sensitivity of people with diabetes. In addition, the stool transfer from an “extroverted and exploring” mouse to an “introverted and shy” mouse resulted in the “introvert” mouse gaining the same “extroverted” behaviors as their donor. The whole idea that stool transfers can change behavior has absolutely floored researchers and doctors. Let’s take a closer look at fecal transplants within three exciting contexts: C. diff, mental illness, and autism.
