CHAPTER 19

ARJUN

“Well, if it isn’t Arjun Mehra,” Rahul scoffed.

“That’s right.”

“The two of you are engaged?”

“That’s right,” I said, a warning in my voice. I slipped my hand into Sharma’s and gave it a squeeze. “Happily engaged to this beautiful woman.”

“When did that happen?” Rahul burst out, turning to Sharma. “As soon as you left me?”

“None of your business,” I said.

“I’m not talking to you.” Rahul turned back to Sharma. “Can I speak to you alone?”

“I told you we’re busy,” Sharma said.

He grabbed her wrist and hissed, “We’re really close to getting the Patel wedding project. With you back on board, it will be spectacular. Think about it, Kiara. We’ve been angling for this wedding for months. It’s finally here. I miss you. I want you back. Will you come?”

“No!”

He gave me a nasty look before turning back to her. “You trust this guy? Is that it?”

“Hey, easy there, mister,” I warned.

“Or what?” Rahul smirked, letting go of her arm.

“Please don’t create a scene or I’ll have to call the security,” Sharma said.

Rahul smiled at her in a phony, shifty way that made me sick. “I can’t believe I’m saying this. But if you want this guy on the Patel project, we can keep him, but if you think you can handle the Vaswani wedding all by yourself, you’re wrong, Kiara. Trust me, you’re going to regret this.”

I wondered how he knew the bride’s family was the Vaswanis but he may have found the information somewhere.

“We had a good thing going. Don’t throw it away. Come back to Krazy Weddings. I miss you!”

Sharma’s face grew red. “You’ve already lost me, Rahul.”

“My offer stays,” he said with a smile, and walked away.

After Rahul and his intern were gone, I found Sharma behind one of the dress racks, shaking. I held her hands and brought her palms to my chest. “Are you okay?”

She leaned in, her forehead resting against my chin. “I don’t know why seeing Rahul upset me so much.”

I put my arm around her, tipped her chin up so she could look at me. Her lips were trembling. Curling a stray piece of hair behind her ear, I said, “He can’t hurt you. You’re going to be fine. You have me.”

Her eyes teared up slightly, but she smiled. “I expect nothing less of you, Mr. Mehra.”

“Thank you for your confidence in me, Ms. Sharma,” I said to lighten the mood, and she laughed.

She looked so beautiful when she laughed. I wanted to hug her and hold her close. I had barely resisted the urge to touch her all day. As we were wrapping up the photo shoot, my mind was on Sharma the whole time, my eyes often wandering in her direction. Was she okay? Did she need anything?

I couldn’t seem to stop worrying about Rahul’s visit, even as I was packing my equipment away and getting ready to leave. The Vaswanis had left, and we were finally alone.

I didn’t see Sharma at first, then I noticed her in the foyer just off the door.
