Chapter nineteen

Ben

“You don't want a rod?” I ask as Chris lounges in a long chair beside me on the edge of the yacht. My fishing line disappears into the surface of the water underneath us while I patiently wait to feel any tugs on the line.

“Nah, I am good,” he replies, and I spare a glance over at him. His body is stretched out over the chair, sunglasses perched over his eyes. The perfect picture of relaxation as he scrolls on his phone.

“Your loss, man,” I tell him, shaking my head as I search for my invisible line again in the endless sea. I’ve been at this for thirty minutes already with no success; fishing was never my thing despite living in Florida.

“Hey, you should look at this,” Chris says, seriousness suddenly appearing as he motions to whatever is on his phone. I reel in my line and prop my fishing rod up in one of the holes on the yacht before walking over to Chris.

He swings his legs over the chair so that his feet are on the ground now, and I sit beside him, taking his phone from his hands.

“What the hell?” I squint my eyes, looking closer at the picture and the description that is now going viral. The image is of Lily and I from yesterday. Lily, swimming in her underwear.

My blood boils as I read the caption. From the corner of my eye, I see Chris offering me sympathetic looks despite the apparent anger he is also feeling.

The caption is downright awful, calling Lily things I would not call even the worst of women, including the reporter who wrote them.

Christine.

From the looks of the pictures, it appears like she must've been one of the passengers on the boats that passed by us while we swam yesterday, which is just a crazy coincidence, but my gut feeling tells me she's been stalking us.

I wouldn't be surprised if she is.

“What are you going to do?” Chris asks, pulling me from my thoughts.

“I don’t know. What can I do.?” I ask him in return, knowing that Lily will be devastated when she sees the picture if she hasn’t already. Whatever progress we've made together is sure to be lost or threatened, at the least.

The thought makes my heart sink.

“I'm not sure. Do you think Lily will be upset?” Chris’s voice chimes out as I sit beside him on the chair now.

I nod my head up and down, and Chris’s frown grows. “You can always send flowers or something. I know it's not your fault that the pictures were taken, but I'm sure flowers will make her feel better. They might take her mind off the publicity at the very least.” he explains, and I know he's making a good point.

I pull my phone from my pocket, pulling up a search engine to find a florist close to her, thankful for the yacht Wi-Fi.

Tapping the website of the highest-rated florist, I search through the dozens of different floral arrangements I can pick from, Chris looking over my shoulder at them as well, offering his opinions.
