Chapter Three
JON
Becoming a toad wasnât part of his goals in life, but once he became a toad, Jon liked to think he did a credible job of behaving as a toad. Well, for the most part. After the first person tried to beat him to death with a shoe after he spokeâmuttering things about how he was going to stop drinking altogether starting tomorrowâhe kept quiet and tried to toad.
But he stayed in Assjacket. Or he hoped he didâit was far harder to read street signs from the ground. He passed his days eating bugs and looking for the witch.
Then one day, the silver ball came out of the sky.
Heâd seen Teagan beforeâif he was entirely honest, heâd been waiting in her weeds with the hopes of catching another glimpse of her. Sheâd nearly stepped on him one day, and from that day on, he found her fascinating.
Everyone he watched as a toad seemed to have a purpose, a goal in life. Parents raised children, working to make the money needed to give the kids the things they wanted. Singles dated. Students learned. Everyone seemed to have a place or a space they fit in.
Which struck him as sad, since he never felt like he fit inâ¦until he spotted Teagan. Her soft hair flowed down her back, her lithe figure enchanted him, yet no one around her seemed to even see her. It was bizarre to watch, but she managed to exist just outside everyoneâs attention except his. So, when the ball zinged out the window of the battered old playhouse tower, he saw it as an opportunity.
Heâd talk to her, even if it freaked her out. Maybe sheâd help.
He didnât know why he was so sure she would help, or even that he was sure she could help, but he felt a strange draw to her and wanted to pursue it. Impulse control wasnât high on Jonâs list of priorities.
He told himself the sensation Teagan caused in him wasnât attractionânot reallyâand he almost believed himself. After all, how could heâa manâfall in love when he existed in the shape of a toad? But regardless of what he told himself, he couldnât help his heart racing when he heard her pushing her way through the weeds to find him.
The question which captured her attention had been, âWho is stopping you from spreading your wings, princess, if not yourself?â And the question still teased at his mind, if he was being entirely honest. He still didnât fully understand why she chose to live with her parents still, or what dangers in particular she hoped to avoid. He thought about some of the things in the world heâd like to show herâsunset over Cannon Beach in Oregon, turning the sea and beach red and gold, the way fields in Nebraska came to life when the wind whipped them into an ocean of wavesâ¦there were so many things.
Teagan pushed into the space near the well with much frustration and what appeared to be more than one bloody scrape.
