I woke up determined to show Jade I could be around Brooklyn and not blast her with my newly found voice. More importantly, I knew if Finn and Jade could just see each other again, everything would go back to how it was supposed to be.

I met Aunt Cassie in the kitchen. She had a death grip on a coffee mug and looked like she had just woken up.

“Morning, want some eggs? I was going to make a spinach and feta omelet, want one?”

“Sounds amazing, but we are going to this lunch thing soon.”

“I guess it is late for breakfast. I worked too late last night.”

“May I pour some coffee, though?”

“Yes, though it weirds me out people your age drink coffee. Your grandma didn’t let us drink it until we went away to college. She told me it would stunt my growth.”

“That’s funny, mom told me I could drink it if I never did it in front of grandma. Now I know why.”

“What did you girls do when I went to bed?”

“I searched the Camden Club website and Googled “outfits for a fancy club lunch” because Brooklyn invited us to a BBQ there this afternoon. I don’t have anything ‘hoity’ enough but decided to wear this linen dress I had brought for our dinner on the roof.”

“You look great. Why are you so worried about what you wear?” asked Aunt Cassie.

“Always, or today?”

“I meant today, but let’s start with always,” she said.

“I think because I get embarrassed if I am dressed differently than everyone else, I mean very different like I am in shorts and they are in dresses. It’s just one more thing to be made fun of.”

“You have a nice circle of friends, it surprises me when you say you would get made fun of a lot.”

“Maybe not a lot now. I used to be, by some mean girls at school, when I wasn’t with my friends. I’m beginning to think it’s because I never said anything to stop it.”

“’You teach people how to treat you.’ I believe that was a quote from Maya Angelou. Another strong woman to add to your Jane list.”

“’You teach people how to treat you?’ I like that… I am not sure how to do it, but I like it,” I said.

“I’m not perfect at it, but as I have gotten older, I have realized some people will push you to see how far they can get. Those people need a clear message back. And I don’t mean physical. Let’s practice. What is something a mean girl would say to you?”

“Usually, stuff like making me do a whole project by myself, and then when the teacher came over she would act like the results were hers.”

“So when the teacher comes over, you could say “well I’ll let Meany explain our findings, she knows it best,” and watch her flounder.

“No way, she would …” I started to explain.

“What? Talk about you to her friends? Was she nicer to you when you did her work?”

“It just seems easier to do it.
