GRACE — BEFORE

Five Years Ago

The sun setting over the mountains cast an ombre pink hue across the sky.

It was like nature’s mandala. A beautifully painted canvas that only lasted for a few minutes before it vanished.

In all truthfulness, though, I was more interested in Austin’s shoulder touching mine than I was in watching the sun set.

He was making it hard to concentrate.

It was also getting cold.

“Do you think it’s going to snow?” Austin asked.

“I don’t know,” I said, trying to keep my teeth from chattering. “I don’t think it’s supposed to.”

“It’s cold enough,” he said. “Are you cold?”

“A little.” I was rather surprised he couldn’t tell I was shivering.

He put an arm around me. Maybe I should have already told him I was cold.

“Is that better?” he asked.

“A little,” I said again, snuggling closer to him.

He pulled me closer and I leaned my cheek against his soft blue flannel shirt.

He smelled good. Like freshly cut firewood and vanilla mixed with the scent of jet fuel. I wasn’t sure if he actually smelled like jet fuel or if it was in the air. Either way, it swirled together into a decidedly masculine scent.

Austin rested his head against mine and we sat there together as the sun went down.

Watching the sun set while sitting in an airplane—on the ground—was probably one of the most interesting things I’d ever done. It was certainly the most romantic.

It wasn’t just being in the airplane, it was being in the airplane with Austin. Wrapped in his arms.

As the last faint glow of the sunset faded over the rugged snow-capped Rocky Mountains, he shifted so that he could put a hand beneath my chin.

Ever so gently, he swept his thumb over my lower lip, then he pressed his forehead against mine.

Our breath mingled, creating a little swirl of white fog.

I looked into his sky blue eyes, looking for answers to questions I didn’t even know how to put words to.

Smiling, he cupped the back of my head and lowered his lips toward mine.

My eyes fluttered closed. Waiting. Wanting.

His breath fluttered against my lips. He was so close I could feel him there. I could feel his warmth.

The sun dipped over the mountains in what seemed like a sudden drop leaving us sitting in a darkened airplane in the cold.

But I didn’t notice any of that.

When Austin’s lips lightly touched mine, my world shifted completely off its axis.

I sighed against him.

It was as though I had been waiting for this moment my entire life.

With his lips pressed against mine, I felt as though he and I became one.

Maybe it was because I had waited so long before I had my first kiss.

Or maybe it would not have mattered if I’d kissed a hundred guys already.

None of them were Austin.

Austin was the only one who would have mattered.

He would always be the only one who mattered.
