Emmeline

What the heck just happened? Em’s entire world flipped upside down and inside out. One moment she was looking at Justin like her very best friend. Then he touched his lips to hers, and everything changed.

“Maybe we should talk about things first?” He pulled his hand away from her cheek. She immediately missed his touch.

Talk . . . yes, they should talk. “Do you want to start us off?”

He reached up to rub his palm along the back of his neck. “How about a walk down the beach?”

A walk and talk. Under the circumstances, that seemed like a good idea. If they were walking next to each other, they wouldn’t have to make eye contact. She already felt like her insides were on fire. Taking some time to let that heat cool off would be a good idea.

“Yeah, let’s go for a walk.” She pushed her chair back and got up. Her knees threatened to buckle, so she grabbed hold of the edge of the table.

“You okay, Em?” He reached out to steady her.

“Of course. The sand just shifted under my feet, that’s all.” The little white lie rolled off of her tongue way too easily, but she didn’t want him to know how unsettled she was. If one kiss from Justin could turn her legs into wet noodles, there was no telling what kind of mind-blowing experience might be in store if they decided to take things to the next level.

“Should we head back toward the house or do you want to walk a little farther in the other direction?” Justin shielded his eyes from the sun with his hand as he glanced down the beach the opposite way from where they’d come.

“Either.” She didn’t trust herself to make any decisions in the moment, no matter how small or insignificant they might seem. Less than a minute ago she’d been willing to climb into his lap and blow past the boundaries of friendship. She needed to compose herself, lock down whatever hormones had been released, and pull herself together.

“Let’s go that way.” Justin pointed toward a pier far off in the distance. “I think we’ve got enough time to go all the way down there and get back to the house before your luggage might arrive.”

“Sounds good.” Em tossed her empty paper cup into a trash can nearby.

Justin kicked off his flip-flops and left them by a lounge chair. “You want to leave your shoes here and we can pick them up on the way back?”

“Sure.” She lined up her sandals next to his. Keeping the conversation to talk of walks and shoes was safe, smart even.

She fell into step next to him as he moved toward the wet sand at the shoreline. Seagulls squawked overhead, hoping for a snack. A light breeze blew at their backs, making the rising temperature bearable. Em kept her gaze on her toes, watching her feet sink into the wet sand as they moved away from the bar.

“I had a good talk with Chick.
