LEONA

After checking myself out in the mirror for the twentieth time, I’d broken out the Lego to keep my hands busy before I ripped out more hair by redoing it for the eighth time. Reid was coming over tonight. He’d asked to see me on the first day we wouldn’t be forced to spend time together. Not that there had been anything forced about the kiss under Smaug.

I picked up another off-white piece and snapped it into place. The base had taken me hours so far, and I wasn’t even a third of the way finished, but the monotony of it helped me clear my mind and kept me from pacing across my bedroom floor until I’d burned a groove into it.

My brain focused on fitting each piece into the perfect spot.

A knock at the front door tugged me from my build. I glanced up at the clock.

“One second,” I shouted, although I doubted he could hear me. Pushing another piece into place, I hopped up and stared down at the mess. There was no hiding this. I nudged the base toward the space under my bed. I should’ve set an alarm.

Another knock, and I flew down the short hallway.

Without looking through the peephole, I swung the door open.

“Reid.” My heart fluttered. I waited to lift off the ground, but I remained solidly in place.

His gaze locked onto mine, and my smile burst free.

“You’re here.” Was my smile as goofy as it felt?

“It’s the right time, isn’t it?”

I nodded and stepped aside, so he could walk in. Unable to help myself, I peered outside to see if anyone else was around, but the courtyard was empty. Not being seen together was probably a safer way to handle this until we figured out what this was. Extra pressure and scrutiny or fallout from Coach Mikelson wasn’t what either of us wanted.

“Sorry, the time got away from me,” I said.

“Are Ashley and Taylor home?”

Closing the door, I turned to face him. “No, they won’t be back for a couple—”

His lips cut off my words.

He’d bridged the gap between us, and my back was pressed against the metal safety door. His hands pressed into the door behind me on either side of my head, caging me against him, not that there was anywhere else I wanted to go. His mouth was searing and hungry and different than yesterday. It was more in every conceivable way.

He tasted like mint.

The tingles spread throughout my body, turning into sparklers under my skin. Hot and bright, the charge ignited every nerve ending. The firm but somehow soft feel of his lips sent the tingles traveling lower, and I gasped, squeezing my thighs together.

His hands moved from the door to the sides of my neck. His thumbs brushing against my skin fired off even more flares.

He shifted his hands off me and rested his forehead against mine. “I know this is crazy. I know we said we wouldn’t, but I can’t stop thinking about you. It’s been keeping me up at night how much I wanted to touch you like this again.
