Chapter 42
What Happened That Night?
Mike kept a close eye on Ronnie sleeping on the couch, peering at his watch every minute or so. He knew rest was necessary, but how long would it take for her to crash without the thiamine?
He lightly shook her shoulder. âSorry to wake you. I think you should eat more.â Mike was surprised at how worried he sounded. Hell, he was terrified she would pass out again, but he needed to convey calm to her.
Startled, her eyes were wide. Did he detect a sliver of fear? Unsure if it was from his presence, or fear of the illness, he concluded it was likely both. She probably thought he had beaten Kelly to death.
Ronnie sat up, stretched, then reached for the crackers, taking a small bite. She no longer had a grayish-white hueâmore of her natural coloring had returned.
Relief washed over him. âFeel better?â
She nodded. âHow long was I asleep?â Her thick lashes brushed her cheeks as she blinked awake.
âFifteen minutes.â
âThatâs it? Seemed like a lifetime.â Ronnie lay her head back down and closed her eyes.
He shifted closer. âKeep your eyes shut. I want to check your pulse again. You look stronger, not so pale.â
âI do? Good.â She spoke around the crackers.
Mike counted the heartbeats, ticking down the time, marveling at how slim her wrist was. As he calculated the numbers, he studied her face. Despite her illness, she was ridiculously beautiful. With her eyes closed, it offered free rein to take in the full, pink lips, sculpted cheekbones, and her delicate jaw that made her eyes seem even bigger.
As if on cue, they popped open and displayed the oversized irises that gave her an almost otherworldly beauty. He momentarily got lost in their gray majesty glowing in the candlelight, a deep, angry ocean with twinges of blue from the couch.
âDr. Walsh, what is your diagnosis?â
Mike chuckled. Sheâd caught him off guard. If he werenât careful, heâd fall head over heels and be completely useless. âMy patient is looking better. Not out of the woods. Eat more, please.â
The gray-blue oceans squinted as she delivered another cracker to her perfect lips.
Her improvement allowed a new worry to blossom. The sound outside the room had been a portion of the atrium crashing fifteen stories into the lobby. Had they been struck by a tornado? What other damage had it caused? National Suites would have to evacuate when the building deteriorated from the rain pouring in and more glass started falling into the lobby. Damn, it would also mean that the storm was wreaking havoc on the rest of the island, filling up the hospitals.
He eyed the curtain that covered the glass, making up the fourth wall of their room. It would not be safe to stay here as the winds whipped up inside the hotel. Something could easily get picked up and shatter that glass. Who had designed such an unstable structure near the shore on a Caribbean Island? Heâd downplayed the damage to Ronnie, but at some point, it would be inevitable.
