. . .

Maggie whistled—sort of (she wasn’t much of a whistler)—as she straightened up around the house. The sun was streaming in through the windows, and she had a smile on her face.

Vacation time loomed. One week—no nine days—of time at the lake. Just her and William. It was going to be great. She had enough burgers and hot dogs to feed a football team—and a hungry one at that, but she sure didn’t want to run out. Plenty of beer, wine, and even two bottles of whiskey. Why not? Maybe they’d be frisky. (Hoped so!) The bag of marshmallows, chocolates, and graham crackers would be a Saturday evening surprise (along with the new little nightie—accent on “little”—hidden for now in the back of her underwear drawer.)

Maggie’s little grin had grown, and she hadn’t even realized it. She wouldn’t have cared much, anyway.

William wasn’t smiling about going away for the week. He had taken time off from work. They didn’t care. The bosses were actually being evasive with William, and he kind of liked it. Even so, work had become a major ugly for him. He was not planning on returning. Forever. He had enough money saved up, and he knew he could disappear for quite a while. Long enough to start a new life with a new job and identity.

No more uglies.

He thought that would make a great bumper sticker, but maybe too obvious.

Death to uglies.

That was even better.

Now William smiled. Something, he realized, he had not done for some time.
