Thomas quickly commissioned Mel to help arrange transport, and an air ambulance transport plane was now on its way from Miami to Roatán’s airport to get Earl. When the Reefer reached the cruise ship port, they parted ways, Ruben taking Jasmin by boat to the decompression chamber at the Anthony’s Key Resort’s clinic adjacent to RIMS, and Thomas riding in the ambulance with Earl, helping to start the IV and push fluids. Earl was taken directly to the airport, where Thomas continued to provide Earl medical support until the air ambulance crew arrived from Miami.

Later, as the flight nurse started a transfusion with O-negative blood, Thomas gave them the full report. The nurse’s eyebrows barely lifted when he told her that something ate part of Earl’s leg while diving. He passed the cooler off to her with Earl’s foot, but without the leg it would be no use.

After seeing his patient off, Thomas called the ranger for the Roatán Marine Park. It didn’t take much for Thomas to convince Oliver to put a moratorium on diving and to clear the beaches of swimmers.

Thomas had seen a lot on the teams and in the hospitals where he had trained and worked, but he could hardly believe where this day had gone.
