Chapter 28

Lafayette Square

Washington, DC

Diego Medina stood in the shadow of the Rochambeau Statue in the southwest corner of Lafayette Square, keeping an eye on the exit of the West Wing across Pennsylvania Ave. Three cars sat under the overhang, and presently three men exited the building. Medina did not make out their faces, but he had a very good idea he was looking at Attorney General Mike Turner, CIA anti-drug station chief Don Hensley, and DEA Director William Warner. He’d have loved to be a fly on the wall in the Oval Office during their meeting with President Jack Carter.

The big black cars left the West Wing, turned onto Pennsylvania, and departed. Medina quickly lost sight of the cars, but it was no matter.

He looked up at Rochambeau, the statue honoring a French nobleman who helped the American colonies win their Revolution. He spit on the base of the statue. If the French had stayed home, maybe American wouldn’t be such a problem for Medina and his employers.

He left the statue, walking up Jackson Place to H St, where he turned right. A block away was his next destination, a sandwich shop, where he knew his next contact was already waiting.

He found Boris Yakovlev sitting in a back corner with a corned beef on rye.

Medina dropped into the chair opposite the big man.

“You didn’t wait?”

Yakovlev shrugged. “They serve quickly. You won’t be waiting long.”

Medina shook his head and left the table, ordering at the counter, returning with his own sandwich and drink. He noted the Russian’s black coffee. He wondered if the big man spiked it with vodka. Medina had known many Russian operatives and mercenaries over the years; they always seemed to carry a flask of vodka in their back pockets.

Medina bit into his turkey and bacon sandwich. “What is the latest?” he said.

“Mendez failed in Mexico,” Yakovlev said.

“Reaper is still alive?”

“All of them.”

“And Mendez?”

“Dead. Blew up in his helicopter.”

Medina shook his head and ate some more.

The Russian said, “Team Reaper will remain a thorn in our side. They will jeopardize the rest of the mission.”

“Where are they now?”

“I don’t know, but they aren’t here. That’s for sure. Our spies in El Paso report they haven’t returned to any of their homes, either.”

“That means they’re running,” Medina said. “That means we’re basically free and clear. They’ll spend days trying to figure out their next move now that they have no infrastructure, and within that time, we’ll have made our moves. We will be long gone before they get to DC.”

Yakovlev sipped some coffee. “You’re more optimistic than I.”

Medina shrugged. “We have a job to do. I’m not going to dwell on difficulties we haven’t faced yet.”

“Speaking of which?”

Medina put down his sandwich, still chewing a bite, and dug a thumb drive out of the inside pocket of his jacket. He passed the thumb drive to the Russian and swallowed. “Everything you need is there.”

Yakovlev took the thumb drive and dropped it into his shirt pocket.

“Time table also included, so our strikes are coordinated,” Medina said.
