GREGG COUNTY

“Think we need to go back an’ check that buildin’…Got a bad feelin’.”

“Whatever you think.”

The driver pulled into a side road, turned around and headed back the way they came.

As they passed the nook down to the creek. The first man glanced at it. “Kids are gone now.”

The driver glanced at him. “So?”

“So, still think it’s a good idea to check that shed.”

“Let’s hide.”

Red ran toward the bikes, grabbed hers an’ quickly rolled it into the trees.

Me an’ Hutch did the same right behind her. Sure as the world, soon’s we got hid, that brown van came into the clearin’ an’ stopped in front of the storage shed. One man got out an’ checked the lock, shrugged his shoulders at the other, an’ then got back in the van.

They sat there for what seemed like forever ‘fore they turned around an’ drove back out.

We looked at each other for a minute, then got up an’ ran back to the shed. I tapped on the door.

“Harriet, you in there?”

“Foot? Is that you?”

“Yeah. Me, Hutch, an’ Red, uh, Frances Ann. You alright?”

“They haven’t hurt me. Can you get me out?”

I looked at the padlock, then scanned around. Saw a short two foot length of two inch flow pipe over near the pumpjack—musta been used as a ‘cheater pipe’ to turn a wrench. I ran over, got it an’ hustled back to the door.

I held it like a baseball bat an’ swung at the lock. Took three times, but it busted open. Hutch unhooked it while Red pulled the door open.

Harriet came runnin’ out an’ straight into my arms, bawlin’ an’ huggin’ my neck. “Thank you, thank you, thank you.”

Hutch thumped my shoulder. “They’re comin’ back!”

I pushed Harriet at Red. “Ya’ll run to the woods, we’ll slow ‘em down.”

They hauled their fanny’s to the trees, while me an’ Hutch ran a little different direction an’ got behind some others.

“Got your sling shot?”

“My what?…You mean my…Oh, sure.” He pulled it out of his back pocket.

I handed him a handful of some of the clear marbles daddy sometimes brought home from the rig for me to play with. Make Jim Dandy ammo.

The van slid to a stop, the two men jumped out an’ ran up to the open door.

One of ‘em turned to the other.

“Dammit to hell. Tol’ you I seen tracks…Look! Headed that way!”

They turned an’ ran toward the trees followin’ our tracks. That’s when me an’ Hutch opened fire.

I popped the one in front right in the forehead, knockin’ his hat off. He stumbled to his knees, got up, wiped the blood drippin’ down from between his eyes, an’ looked our way.

“Damn you little bastards!”

Hutch caught the other one on his cheek. It bled too.

Now they were really mad.

“Fall back an’ reload.”

“Right.”

We went back deeper into the woods leadin’ ‘em away from where Red an’ Harriet went. We were in our world, now.

Got behind a couple other trees, me a burr oak an’ Hutch a big sycamore, drew back an’ let fire…
