Bridge builder Joseph Strauss worked for 13 years, promoting the idea. Even after San Franciscans voted to build the bridge, it took 4 years and $35 million to build and opened in 1937. Today it would cost over a billion dollars.

Stop in at the Golden Gate Bridge Pavilion. It opened in time for the bridge’s 75th anniversary and is the place to learn more about the bridge—and buy souvenirs.

On your way to the bridge, stop at Fort Point (nps.gov/fopo; 415-556-1693) just beneath the south tower of the bridge near the water’s edge. It’s a great place to get a close-up view of the bridge as well as to find out more about the Civil War soldiers who were stationed here when the fort was operational.
