* * *

That evening, the three of them went through the routines they’d established over the past few days, building fires, preparing dinner, washing up. But all the time they worked, Alexis kept glancing around, startling every time the wind rustled the leaves or a bird called. After dinner, while Zeke and Keira toasted the marshmallows Zeke had come across while moving camp, Alexis walked a few steps away from the light of the fire and stared into the woods. What if she’d made the wrong decision, and the kidnappers came back tonight? But Zeke was here, and that made her feel safer. It wasn’t fair to lay all this on Zeke’s broad shoulders, but he’d stepped up as their protector and she was so glad he did.

Tomorrow was another story. Once they’d pumped up the raft and hit the river, she and Keira would be on their own once again. What if the raft wouldn’t hold air? What if she couldn’t get them through the rapids? What if the kidnappers—

Zeke touched her shoulder. “You okay?”

“I guess so.” She turned to face him and managed a smile. “Just wrestling with some doubts.”

He nodded slowly. “I know all about those. Haven’t found them to be particularly helpful, though.”

“Oh, yeah? What do you suggest I do about it?”

“I don’t have answers.” He looked up at the sky, just beginning to turn pink as the sun dipped lower. “Maybe you should talk to someone who does.”

She followed his gaze toward the heavens. “You’re right. Keep an eye on Keira for me for a few minutes, would you?”

“Sure.” He turned. “Hey, Keira. You got another one of those marshmallows for me? I dropped the last one in the fire.”

Alexis walked to the back of the cabin, where she could get an unobstructed view of the sunset. On the edges of the woods, beside the creek, pink fireweed bloomed. Poppy followed along and sat on her foot, leaning against her leg. Alexis smiled and rested a hand on Poppy’s head, touched at the dog’s loyalty, considering she could be missing out on a dropped marshmallow back at the fire.

Alexis watched as the sun began to paint the wispy clouds floating overhead the same shade as the fireweed. The pink intensified, spreading from the clouds to the snowcapped peaks of Denali and Foraker and on to paint the entire western sky crimson. God had created it all, the mountains, the sun, the trees, the flowers. A God who could do all this could surely keep an eye on Keira and her. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? And not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father’s care.

She prayed then, with her eyes wide open to receive this gift. Some of the prayer she spoke aloud, some just in her thoughts and some was simply sharing her feelings, but she gave over her doubts and her fears and she thanked the Lord for all He had done to protect them, most of all for sending them to Zeke.
