Alice slid over so the family could pass them. She smiled perfunctorily. Once the family had moved to the far end of the row, she turned to Ben.
âAs soon as that man regains consciousness, heâs going to tell them about you.â
Ben nodded. âI donât think he saw you. Iâm hoping your disguise still works.â
Alice drew in a long breath. âOkay, what do we do after the game?â
She had no idea what to do in the city with so little cash, no one she could reach out to, and no credit card or bank resources. They couldnât stay outside. It was going to be cold tonight. Sheâd seen warnings on the TV screens theyâd passed. The city had issued an extreme cold weather alert and were opening more resources for those living on the streets. Maybe they could ask a homeless person for tips about where to go?
Ben scanned their area and then looked down at the basketball court. The building was filling up. The game would be starting soon.
âIâve been thinking on this. We canât go to a normal hotel, motel or anyplace that will want to see our ID or a credit card. I know some places that take cash, but we donât have a lot, and some of the people in those places might catch on that Iâm a cop. They are also likely to be susceptible to pressure from the gang thatâs after you.â
Alice swallowed. Sheâd considered this, as well.
âI donât have relatives in the city, and my friends are cops or cop-adjacent,â he explained.
âThey wouldnât trust you? Believe your story?â she asked. She had only known Ben a day, but she trusted him absolutely. Did he not have friends who would feel the same way?
Ben made another scan of their section. âI want to say yes. There are men Iâm tight with. But...â
Alice struggled to understand for a moment. âYou donât want to implicate them?â
âIâm convinced thereâs a mole. Someone trusted whoâs turned. Their best play is to convince everyone that the mole is me.â
Alice could feel her mouth drop open. Ben, the mole? That made no sense.
âBut you arenât. You canât be. Itâs only because of you that Iâm not already with those men.â
Ben nodded. âBut because of me the police donât know where you are. Iâve isolated you. For all they know, the gang does have you.â
âBut they donât.â Alice was ready to spit in aggravation. âI can tell them...â She trailed off. She couldnât tell them anything, not now. Not until the trial was over or the mole was neutralized.
Ben put a hand on hers. âI know itâll all come out right in the wash. When itâs all over, everyone will know I was doing the right thing. And most importantly, youâll be safe. Butââ
âBut?â She needed to know. She had more at stake here than anyone.
âIâd be putting anyone I called in a tight place. And I donât know what the moleâs been disseminating while weâve been out of touch.â
Alice drew in another long breath.
