JOHN. Neither did I.

ERIC looks at him.

You’re right. He didn’t put it around. He was extremely careful. In fact, when I went to see him in hospital, he put it down to an encounter he had on holiday… oh, years ago now. Not that it matters. But I guess you can’t help thinking about it.

Beat.

ERIC. Nice flowers.

JOHN. Yes.

ERIC. Did you see that bouquet in the shape of a bone? I wonder who sent that.

JOHN. He was there, actually. Brad. The one in the leather collar.

ERIC. I thought he was a vicar.

JOHN. Nobody knows what he is. Even Guy didn’t; they never met.

ERIC. You won’t tell Eric, will you?

JOHN. What?

ERIC. That I stayed the night.

JOHN. That’s all you have done.

ERIC. He had his fingers burnt with Norman, I can tell you! Best thing he did giving him the elbow. You mustn’t say anything. You won’t, will you?

JOHN. Of course I won’t.

ERIC. I don’t want him getting suspicious.

JOHN. When’s he back?

ERIC. When his mother gets out of traction. We’re making a go of it, see, and I think it’s working out alright. I’ve got quite accustomed to the idea of running a pub since the police turned me down. I’ve had a few ideas an’ all.

JOHN. I’ve thought about getting a pub… or a restaurant or something.

ERIC. So why don’t you?

JOHN. Maybe I will.

ERIC (looking at him). You’re odd, you are.

JOHN. Am I?

ERIC. Keep yourself to yourself, don’t you?

No response.

Do you ever open up?
