When staying in a Kenyan household it is considered polite to tip the staff upon your departure. One delicate matter: do not embarrass male domestic staff by asking them to undertake the laundering of feminine underwear.

Because of the scarcity of employment, and the closeness of family networks in which “looking after your own” comes first, you may also find, should you get chatting to staff, waiters, or drivers, that they will often ask if you can find a job for one of their relatives, or whether you would like to employ them yourself. This is a tricky request, as it could provoke difficulties with their current employers. Best to say that you will bear it in mind and that should something come up, you will let them know.
