Talk about your experience winning the Betty Crocker scholarship.

I won a pretty big scholarship from Betty Crocker when I was a senior in high school to go and study food science and nutrition if I wanted to go that route. The competition was based, first, on cooking and, secondly, on a test about general food and cooking knowledge: weights, measurements, best practices and so forth. I scored the best on the test, won the cooking part and beat out all the competition. It was really a source of amusement for everyone because it was the first year that boys were allowed to be a part of the competition, and I won. We were the first group of boys to take home economics courses at the high school. I didn’t take the scholarship, but I did keep the other prize: a tiny, 100 percent sterling silver stove charm meant for a charm bracelet that I have to this day.

Were there any fad sweets that you ate growing up that aren’t around really anymore?

In the early 1970s, ice milk came along as a substitute for ice cream, and I ate quite a bit of it. It was marketed as a product that was supposed to be a little healthier for folks, but it was a little lacking in body for my taste. It was a fad that I think has totally gone away. Thank goodness, because it wasn’t very good at all.
