Kellan sat back and watched as Kelsey took the lead, a master at work. For all these years he’d let himself believe her life had turned out to be as amazing as she deserved. Wasn’t the truth always harder to swallow?

“Oh, is that right?” Avery said into the phone. The note of alarm in her voice caused him to sit up a little straighter. “Right from the parking lot?” She paused. “I’ll lock my doors right now.”

Kelsey caught Kellan’s gaze and held it. The zing of electricity was more of a comfort than a surprise at this point.

“Okay, then,” Avery said after they heard the click-click of her car being locked. “I’ve got clients in, so I’ll have to call you back.” Another pause. “Love you too.”

Avery came back in the room with a tsk-tsk look on her face. “Can you believe someone stole a car from the ER parking lot?” She threw her hands up in the air. “People! Who can you trust these days?”

“That’s awful,” Kelsey said with a frog in her throat that could have given them away with a more astute person.

With a heavy sigh, Avery reclaimed her seat.

“Now, where were we?” she asked, the brightness returning to her eyes at the thought of a sale.

Kellan wanted to know more about the car theft. “What happened at the hospital is terrible. Do they have any suspects?”

Avery shook her head. “Ed, my husband, works in mechanical maintenance. All he said was to be sure to lock my car since there’s a thief out running loose.” She made a dramatic show of exhaling before straightening up again and locking gazes with Kesley. “Do we see bringing a family here someday?”

Kelsey cleared her throat. She glanced over at Kellan. “Yes. I think we do.”

He nodded and smiled.

“Then, you’ll want to lock a two-bedroom in now,” Avery said. “They’re selling the fastest.”

All Kellan could think was how to get the hell out of there. News traveling about the car theft wasn’t good. Would Sheriff Lawler assume Kelsey had taken it? He had to guess the two of them were together by now.

One thing in Kellan’s favor was that he’d reported his cell phone as missing to the sheriff. Could he concoct a story that he couldn’t reach the sheriff without his cell? That Kelsey had confided she didn’t trust the law and begged for his help?

No, that would put her as the bad guy in this scenario. He wouldn’t do that to her. Couldn’t.

“Do you want a tour?” Avery asked.

“With my ankle, I should probably get back to camp,” Kelsey said in a smooth move. “Do you have a brochure that we can take with us?”

“Um, sure,” Avery said, sounding a little put off by the request. She pushed up to standing before shaking her head. “I would just hate for you to miss out on one of these beauties.” She sat back down and placed her palms on the table again. “How about this.” She leaned in conspiratorially. “I can offer a ten percent off ‘builder’s special’ on the pricing you’ll see on the brochure.
