Chapter Six

My father’s entire demeanor changed right before my eyes. In fact, I hardly recognized him. I mean, nothing ever shook my dad. That was the main reason why he was so successful. But something was definitely wrong.

Was that sweat on his forehead?

He coughed into his hand and reached for a napkin with shaking hands. The man in front of me was not the impeccably dressed sharp-as-a-tack professional whom I usually encountered at the offices of Tanner Global Enterprises.

Nor was he the sweet and doting father that I grew up with. The one who kissed away my boo-boos, told me bedtime stories, and made everything wonderful again.

This man looked like he was in shock. Like an accident victim. As if he never expected to have this discussion.

He seemed worried. And that was worse than the shock. He inhaled a deep breath, as if preparing himself for what would come next.

I held my sweaty hands together in my lap and tried to calm the slowly increasing pounding inside of my chest.

What could he possibly have to tell me that I didn’t already know?

I knew all about the woman he used to be married to, the one and only Kaylie, who was, thankfully, not my biological mother. I can’t even begin to count the times I’ve exclaimed “thank the Goddess!” to myself over that little gem of information.

I knew I was almost definitely a Fire Witch. And I knew he wasn’t infallible. Something all children find out about their parents, eventually.

So what could be so bad as to cause that particular mixture of fear, shock, and grief in his eyes?

What could make my unshakeable powerhouse of a father turn pale and shaky?

What secrets were left between us?

I understood that what he did, he did out of love for me. His only daughter. And I forgave him for all of it the moment he was cleared by the Tribunal and I was able to bring him home. My father was a good man, a talented Witch, and a loving dad.

So what was he so nervous about?

We sat in uncomfortable silence until, finally, he raised his head and looked directly at me. His dark brown eyes were full of turmoil. I braced myself.

“Angela, first, let me say that as your father my first job since the second you were born has been to protect you. Always.”

“I know that, Daddy.”

“Your mother was a very special woman. I loved her the moment I laid eyes on her. There wasn’t anything I wouldn’t have done for her.”

“Okay—”

“Please, sweetheart, don’t interrupt. I, uh, am having a difficult time here, and I know I deserve it, I’ve made mistakes, but it’s time you knew the entire truth.”

I clasped my hands together as he continued to speak. Jody’s presence was in the back of my mind, a solid rock of support. I needed it just then.

“Here, take a look at this.” He took a folded piece of paper out of his wallet and handed it to me.

It was a photograph. There was a crease right down the center.
