Joan and I set about dressing the queen for the day. As we finished attaching her sleeves, a servant arrived with a tray of food. Her Grace picked at the offering, shoring up her strength before facing the impatient courtiers amassed outside. “I have not forgotten our task, Margery.” She rose from the table. “Once we are through with the unpleasant business at hand, I would like for you to return to the wardrobe to fetch me something that belonged to Mistress Boleyn.”

“Anything in particular, Your Grace?” She already had Anne Boleyn’s necklace. What more could she possibly want? I wondered, uncharitably.

Sensing my mistrust, she placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. “I shall leave that to you. It must be something that would provide comfort to her daughter, nothing that should cause disquiet.”

The sadness in her eyes melted the chill in my voice. “I know of just the thing,” I answered, thinking of Anne’s girdle book. I was certain she wore it into the Tower, but we never found it during our catalogue of her possessions. When we arrived at Windsor, Mistress Stonor told me that her belongings had been removed from the royal apartments before Queen Jane could see them, so perhaps it was here.

Sucking in a lungful of air, the queen squared her blue sarcenet-clad shoulders before striding into the privy chamber to greet the waiting men.
