Nightshade stopped in front of a small tavern in the Falkland Islands, relieved to reach civilization again.

The sign over the door featured a large bird and read, The Sea Spray Inn.

She entered the bar, feeling as if she’d stepped back in time. Dark woodwork sucked the light out of the room, along with the tired blue walls. Paintings of sea creatures adorned them, surrounded by fisherman’s nets, sea shells, and sailor’s instruments. The place felt ancient and solid and battered by the sea.

She sidled up to the scarred bar and sat down, her feet aching. “I’ll have a Bloody Mary.”

It had taken a while to walk to the coast and finagle a ride off that damned iceberg. The look on the whaler’s faces had been priceless. What was a woman doing in the middle of Antarctica?

They had served their purpose well enough, feeding and entertaining her until she grew tired of them. She’d shown her gratitude with a kiss, a deadly one, then fed them to the fishes.

After all, dead men told no tales.

The people in the bar gave her a cursory glance, then turned back to their beverages and the television overhead. Reports of a prison break scrolled across the screen as the bartender shoved a drink toward her.

“From the trial of the century to the escape of the century,” the television blared. “World famous magician Hugh Harrison is at it again.”

She looked at the destroyed prison and laughed, drawing several disapproving looks. What were those idiots up to now?

“The prison is a complete loss,” said one official. “We’ll have to transfer the inmates to other facilities until we can rebuild. Authorities have estimated the damage at over two hundred million dollars.”

“Despite the damage, no deaths or injuries were reported,” the blond reporter continued.

“How quaint,” Nightshade sneered and sipped her blood red cocktail. Their love of humans would be their undoing. If she didn’t get them first.

She would come for Hugh. She would come for all of them. But there were too many to take on by herself. She would need help, someone as deadly as herself. Someone with connections. Dark connections.

She fingered the rim of her glass, her mind skimming over the possibilities. Kane, Pathos, Fierra, Grim, and Garren were all dead or missing. There were a few others, but she had trouble remembering them at the moment. Dale had wiped her memory hard. She still couldn’t remember what she was doing at his house the night he’d disappeared.

Regardless, her choices were limited. Few Rogues were still willing to work with her. Collaboration was challenging for someone such as her, on so many levels. She’d killed more than a few trying.

Weaklings, she told herself. Banished Supers not worthy of the pitiful powers they wielded.

She needed someone strong. Someone who got things done, regardless of the means.

Her eyes brushed a wilting flower languishing in a vase on a table nearby. Her lips curved into a smile.

Magnus, she thought. Fierce, strong, deadly, and best of all…discreet.

Most Supers didn’t even know he existed.
