Like any good Libra, I woke up on the morning of my birthday with both dread and delighted anticipation. I loathed and loved my birthday, and it was a weird balance of wanting attention and not wanting anyone to look at me.

But ultimately, it wasn’t my choice whether or not I got attention.

The door creaked open as I was rubbing the sleep from my eyes, and Veronica’s head emerged, backlit by the hall light. I could hear my mom shuffling around in the kitchen making coffee and opening the fridge, sounds of the house waking up. I stayed quiet as she crept over to Alyssa’s bed and jostled her awake. There was some grumbling, but Alyssa got up, and together they came over to my bed.

Veronica prodded my shoulder. “Move over, birthday girl.”

Alyssa didn’t bother asking me to move. She just clambered over me like a monkey to wedge herself between me and the wall. I scooched closer to her so Veronica could lay next to me, squishing into my side. “Damn, you’re both getting too big for this.”

“Hush. You’re going to do this every year regardless.”

I could hear her smile in the dark. “Yeah, you’re right.”

“Tell the story, Vero,” Alyssa mumbled, already fighting sleep with her face pressed to my shoulder.

“Yeah, V. I wanna hear it.”

“Okay, brats. Here goes.” Veronica waited a beat, as though gathering her memories. “Maggie, you were inconsiderate as fuck because you were a whole two months early.”

I pouted in the dark. “Since when is being early inconsiderate?”

“It is when it’s one in the morning during the worst thunderstorm of the season.” Veronica shook her head, but I could hear her smile as she continued, “You picked the worst possible time to come out. I had to stay with Grandma, and they basically just grabbed me from my bed and tossed me into the car like a sack of potatoes.”

Alyssa giggled. “You make it sound like you were kidnapped.”

“I practically was, dude. Just left on Grandma’s porch with my Ninja Turtles backpack and a coloring book.” Veronica paused again, and this time, her voice was subdued, sad. “You were really small because you were so early, but Mami said you came out quick. It took you a while to cry when they pulled you out, and Papi said it was the longest minute of his life.”

I heard this story every year, but every year, this part still put a lump in my throat. “That’s really sad,” I said, and my voice was scratchy with more than just sleep.

“Yeah, it was.” The smile came back to her voice, though, as she said, “But then you cried, really loud, and you haven’t shut up since.”

I smacked my hand against her stomach, and she groaned but then laughed. “Mami said that’s how she knew you were a fighter, and that’s the only way she got through the three weeks you were in the hospital. I remember knowing something was wrong and wondering where you were, and I don’t think our parents were around together that whole time.
