Chapter Ten

Georgia walked into work the following Monday morning after her weekend with Drew, her emotions an odd, jumbled mixture of happiness and disappointment. She never would have believed she could experience such contradictory feelings at the same time, but there was no separating the two distinct sentiments that had been warring inside of her since Drew had dropped her off yesterday afternoon.

Thinking about her time with him made her smile and was definitely responsible for the light, pleasant sense of happiness bolstering her up. But she’d be lying to herself if she didn’t admit that she was saddened by the fact that he’d stayed true to the subtle warning he’d given her at the beginning of their weekend together—that work kept him too busy for him to commit to any kind of relationship.

And he’d backed up that claim by walking her to her apartment and kissing her goodbye, no words necessary for her to know things were over.

From the beginning, she’d known her time with him was temporary—despite the undeniable chemistry and connection that had formed between them. He’d given her the best weekend of her adult life, stirred up her emotions, and now she was going to have to figure out how to get over him and move on.

If that was even possible.

So, as disappointed as she was, she was grateful she hadn’t been blindsided when they parted ways without any promises to see one another again. She hadn’t asked, not wanting to put him on the spot or risk rejection, and he hadn’t suggested another date. She respected his decision and honesty, but that didn’t mean the reality of the situation didn’t hurt her heart. Which told her just how far and fast she’d fallen for Drew Daniels.

As soon as she entered the office, Billie rushed up to her, a huge, expectant grin on her face. “So, how did your weekend with Drew go?” she asked, her blue eyes filled with curiosity behind her black-framed glasses. “Where did he take you, and what did you do?”

Georgia laughed as her coworker and friend shot off the questions faster than she could answer them.

“The weekend was fantastic,” she said, starting toward the break room with Billie following behind, desperate for some caffeine to jump-start her morning. “And he took me to his family’s cabin in the Catskill Mountains.” As for how they’d spent their time together, she kept her summary PG-rated. “We went ziplining, he made me a steak dinner for my birthday, and we ate s’mores while he gave me a quick rundown of the basic constellations. It was a really fun weekend.”

Billie set her hands on her hips and narrowed her gaze while Georgia made herself a cup of coffee from the Keurig. “Why do I get the impression you’re skipping over all the good stuff?”

She laughed. “There was definitely good stuff,” she admitted, but didn’t elaborate. Those memories were for her, and her alone.

Billie settled a hip against the counter, still not done with her interrogation.
