Dr. Marianne Legato, now 72, is the daughter of a physician. Her earliest memories are of accompanying her father on his hospital rounds, which were the only occasions when she was able to spend time alone with him. Ironically, her father vehemently opposed her decision to follow him into medicine because he was of the old-school belief that a woman’s first allegiance must be to her husband and family—and that didn’t conform to the lifestyle of a doctor. Seeing her determination, her father offered to let her practice with him if she agreed never to marry. She refused, and they became estranged for decades.

Marianne has gone on to an extraordinary 40-year career in medicine and is on the forefront of studying how gender differences should be factored into medical practices. She has written several books, including the recent Why Men Never Remember and Women Never Forget. (I’d love her just for coming up with that title, if nothing else!)

In addition to being a practicing internist and a professor of medicine at the prestigious Columbia University, this strong, independent woman travels extensively, lecturing in support of the science she so believes in. Marianne writes books, wins awards, and continues to have a major influence on the way that the medical community pays attention to the differences between men’s and women’s bodies. She’s truly a force of nature.
