MONDAY, OCTOBER 29

As soon as I left Leon’s office, I called Michael Craig, David’s brother. Michael hadn’t come to the hearing, which I thought was strange. He told me he had three surgeries scheduled that day and couldn’t reschedule them, but after him telling me how close he and David were, I would have thought he would be in court supporting his brother.

“Congratulations,” Michael said as soon as he answered. “It’s all over the news. You must have done a fantastic job.”

“It went my way,” I said. “Sometimes it happens, sometimes it doesn’t.”

“Will the prosecution appeal?” he said.

“They could, but I doubt they will. I think they’ll arrest the sheriff and his deputy and prosecute them for perjury.”

“Wow, this is straight out of a movie,” Michael said.

“Nah, you know what they say. Truth is stranger than fiction. Listen, have you spoken with David?”

“No,” Michael said. “I haven’t talked with him since the day he was arrested.”

“Yeah, he mentioned you hadn’t come to visit him.”

“I just couldn’t make myself do it. The thought of him being caged up like an animal was just too much for me. I didn’t want to see him like that.”

“Well, you’ll barely recognize him. The time off the booze and drugs has made an amazing difference in how he looks and how he feels.”

“Good,” Michael said. “Excellent. I’m glad to hear that.”

“It’d be nice if you’d reach out to him,” I said. “He’s holed up in his house surrounded by media. They’ve staked out his place. I’d feel a lot better about him if I knew he was out of there for a few days until things calm down. And there’s something else I want to ask you. Have you ever heard of a person named Alf Higgins?”

Michael was silent for several seconds. “Alf Higgins? Where does he fit into this picture?”

“I’m not sure,” I said. “Do you know him?”

“I haven’t seen him in a couple of decades. Knew him when we were kids. He was our next-door neighbor when my dad was a JAG officer at Fort Campbell in Clarksville. My dad prosecuted soldiers from the 101st Airborne Division when they got out of line.”

I nodded, looked at Jack, and winked. A connection. The plot thickened.

“What was your impression of Alf Higgins back in those days?”

“He was a sociopathic bully who was well on his way to becoming a killer. He used to build guillotines in his garage and test them out on cats in the neighborhood.”

“So you were afraid of him?”

“Everybody was afraid of him. How did you come up with his name?”

“Your brother wrote it down on a piece of paper before the hearing today and told me if anything happened to him I should take a look at the paper. I decided I didn’t want to wait until something happened to David and looked at the paper. Higgins’s name was on it. I think Higgins may have killed the judge and put him in a freezer at your brother’s house. I think
