About Your Compass
A compass consists of a base plate, needle (the moving red needle always points to magnetic north, or a nearby piece of metal), the rotating compass housing (marked with degrees and the four cardinal directionsâNorth/0°, East/90°, South/180°, and West/270°), and an arrow-shaped box in which you can frame the compass needle. These are the only parts you need for basic navigation. Any other features on your compass are bells and whistles that are not necessary for most backpacking needs and require explanations beyond the scope of this book.
