Chapter Fifteen

Three days later, Anthony and Thomas had finished loading everything in the wagon.

Carrie stepped out onto the porch and shielded her eyes against the early morning sun cresting the perimeter of oak and maple trees that lined the far pasture. “Are they here yet?”

Anthony shook his head and pulled his pocket watch out. “They have another twenty minutes before they’re supposed to arrive.”

Carrie sighed. She didn’t think Matthew and Janie would be late, but she was anxious to be on the road.

“Are the girls and Russell ready?” Anthony asked.

“The girls will be out any minute,” Carrie replied. “Russell’s in the barn saying good-bye to Bridger.” She understood the sympathetic look in Anthony’s eyes. Separating Russell from his horse so soon after the gelding arrived was difficult. Only Anthony’s strong wish for Russell to join them during their trip to Boston had convinced him to leave Bridger.

“Have you said good-bye to Granite?”

Carrie nodded. “I was in the barn early this morning.” She smiled, pushing down her own sadness. She knew she couldn’t always be on the plantation, but other than her trip to get the children, she and Granite hadn’t been apart since his birth. Saying good-bye for three weeks was hard.

Rose appeared on the porch, smiling brightly. John and Hope followed close behind. “Are we ready to leave?”

“Almost,” Anthony replied. “Your bag is in the wagon.”

“Jed didn’t change his mind?” Carrie asked.

“No,” Rose said ruefully. “I tried once more to tell him what a fun trip we’re going on, but he insists he wants to stay here on the plantation with Moses.”

“And Tucker,” Carrie added with a smile.

“Boston and New York City don’t stand a chance against Moses and Tucker,” Rose agreed. “I suppose I should be grateful my other two children want to go.”

Abby walked outside, Bridget nestled in her arms. “This baby girl wants one more kiss from her mama and daddy.”

Carrie rushed over to give Bridget a noisy kiss, delighted when her daughter erupted into giggles. It was much harder to leave Bridget than it was to leave Granite. Once again, she wondered if she was doing the right thing.

“Stop thinking,” Abby commanded.

“I can’t,” Carrie admitted. She didn’t have to ask what her mother meant.

“You think I can’t take care of my granddaughter?”

“It’s not about Bridget,” Carrie answered. “It’s about me. I can’t believe I’m leaving her for three weeks. When we made plans to attend Peter and Elizabeth’s wedding, I didn’t have a little girl. I don’t want to miss anything!”

Abby gazed at her with understanding compassion. “I know, but they’ll be so disappointed if all of you don’t come. The reason they agreed to a wedding in Boston, instead of here on the plantation, is because everyone promised to be there.”

“You promised too,” Carrie reminded her.

“I know she’d like us to be there, too, but it’s not the same as having you, Janie and Florence. I’ve written Elizabeth a letter, and one of those bags in the wagon has our present to them. I know she’ll understand,” Abby said confidently.
