Godâs People Are Not Defined by the Difficulties of Their Past
It is impossible to read Genesis 41 without being struck by Josephâs response to his past circumstances. This will become even clearer as the story progresses, but already, in naming his firstborn Manasseh, we see that Joseph identifies with the people of God. This is the grace of God at work! Only the assurance that comes from knowing, serving, and hoping in God can explain this response in Joseph, or in any of us.
How can I read Josephâs story and continue to wallow in my hurts, disappointments, and weaknesses? The next time you snap somebodyâs head off because he made you mad, donât reach for your usual âIâm a redheadâ or âIâm a hot-blooded Latin (or Irish, or Black, or [insert your ethnic excuse]).â Stop and ask yourself if your ethnic background, hair color, anger-filled home in which you were raised, or any other condition of your upbringing is a sufficient excuse for sin.
God is bigger than your past. That parent, sibling, or teacher who abused you does not define who you are today. That person who hurt, disappointed, rejected, or criticized you repeatedly while you were growing up cannot âmakeâ you something that Christâs blood is insufficient to cover. That church you grew up in, filled with backbiting hypocrites, is no excuse for you to reject Godâs people today. In short, you need a Manasseh! Donât be defined by the difficulties of your past. Instead, be defined by the hope that is yours in Christ.
