In every sense, their time horizon, execution, and skill level are different from those involved in the annual fund. The first step for the major gift asker is the identification of the prospect list. Potential names come from a variety of sources. Among the most common as noted earlier are

Major givers to the annual fund. The tension between the annual fund and major gift officers is intense. In general, major gift officers have priority, although in educational institutions their gifts are also included in class totals for reunion campaigns.

Word-of-mouth reference from reliable sources such as classmates, community leaders, and so on.

Analysis of research databases tracking philanthropic gifts and cross classifying with people who have links to the organization.

Major gifts given to other organizations (uncovered by research)

Individuals whose organizations have recently had great economic success and might be expected to have received significant bonuses or stock options.
