Chapter 6
There was a long silence while Jeff prepared them both a cup of tea. Amelia could tell he was recalling the wedding and the beautiful experience they shared, especially as it included Maddie. It was a wonderful weekend, almost magical, and she was so glad she went. Amelia enjoyed recalling it in silence as well. She enjoyed being in the company of Jeff and his friends. She was so happy for the beautiful couple as she remembered the way Quinn and Ali were looking at each other. Amelia teared up, thinking about Aliâs emotion and Quinnâs resolve. Ali was so beautiful that day, and she gave a bouquet to both Elle and Amelia. That bouquet was now on the window sill above the kitchen sink. Jeff placed a cup of tea before her and sat down with a cup of his own.
âI didnât want you to judge me on my wealth,â Jeff said. âI wanted you to judge me for me. You knew I had money, but you didnât know I had a giant mortgage I was barely paying.â He looked at her with absolute seriousness. âI am a billionaire, Amelia.â
âBillion?â she asked, eyebrows raised. âWith a âbâ?â
âYes.â
Amelia was quiet for a long time. âIâm sorry,â she said, âyouâve shocked my system, Dr. Michaels.â
âMe and Grandpa had a shop where we made all kinds of inventions. No word of lie, Grandpa died the day before I got the patent on something he suggested I invent. My partner is the business genius and together we make a good team.â Jeff pointed from her to him. âLike us?â
Amelia looked pained and the rest of the day, both of them dead tired, they self isolated, taking turns tending Maddie, but not talking much. The next morning, they awoke refreshed and Jeff took the next three days off.
âWant to go to the park?â he asked in a neutral manner, seemingly not sure whether he would be treated with indifference or rejection.
âSure,â Amelia said, grabbing her coat, a very pretty royal blue that accentuated her face. âI always have Maddieâs bag and stroller ready to go. Letâs roll, captain.â
From the house it was a twenty-minute walk to the park that went around a small lake. There was a manicured gravel travel skirting the lake, maybe a walk totaling a quarter of a mile. The trees were lovely and squirrels scampered, stopping occasionally then scurrying away with impossibly quick movements. Maddie was wide awake in her stroller the whole time, looking with pleasure at the peaceful view in front of her.
An elderly couple, walking at a good clip, smiled at them and at Maddie. âWhat a beautiful baby they have,â the elderly lady said to her husband within earshot before they left the trail on the other side, leaving Amelia, Jeff and Maddie alone.
âSo youâd like to open a business some day?â Jeff asked.
âYes, I would,â she said. âMy grandmother sold baked goods at the market until she was ninety and Mom opened a grocery store.
