It was clear enough. Not only did he look big enough to do what he was threatening, he looked as if he’d enjoy it. And my gun was still over in the dresser drawer. I was getting a little tired of all the people who seemed to be gunning for me. After this, maybe I’d wear the gun, permit or no permit “It’s clear,” I said. “It’s so clear I can see the mud at the bottom. And I’m not even sure you can do what is necessary if I refuse to come with you.”

“It can be arranged for you to learn.”

“Where are you supposed to take me? Po Hing’s house?” “Yes.”

“Well, he won’t dare do much there,” I said. “Let’s go.” I’m not sure, but I think he looked disappointed. Still, he waited patiently for me to go ahead of him through the door. Downstairs, I suggested using my car so that no one would have to bring me back, but he insisted that I go with him. He led the way to a car that was driven by another Chinese. “I also don’t like the gorilla act. The next time I may find out if your boy is as tough as he looks.”

“Wing is a good man,” he said amiably. “Have a drink. If it’s poison, it’s the best that money can buy.”

“Or thieves can steal,” I muttered. But I did go over to the table and pour myself a drink. When I finished, I noticed that Po Hing was still staring at me.

“I don’t dig you,” he said. “You’re an insurance dick, right?”

“Right.”

“I don’t like cops and maybe I wouldn’t like insurance cops if I saw more of them. Maybe I’m starting to dislike them right now. But I figured you for a right guy when I saw you before. Now I don’t know. You got any identification?” “Tons of it,” I said. I pulled out my Wallet and tossed it to him. “Look for yourself.”

He went through the wallet, looking at all the papers. Finally, he tossed it back to me.

“Tell me something,” he said. “I don’t know much about this insurance racket. I know everything about my own racket, but this is different. Maybe a guy could be an insurance dick and
