Benny doesn’t know what hits him in his chest. As he opens the front gate to his cottage in Oak Cliff he hears a rustling in the nearby woods. He turns to look when it strikes him, something like a big rock or a hard horse apple. He doesn’t have time to think about it though. He falls back crashing through his picket fence. His body floats down snapping crisp dry Texas Star branches, crashing down and down through the golden sunset landing on, crushing a bed of lamb’s ears and lies there, still. It is his heart. He can feel his blood pumping out onto his Burberry coat. He is worried about his coat as he lies dying. He is worried about the bloodstains and he dies with petals of blue Texas Star flowers drifting down onto his body.

It was a bullet, a big bullet from a Winchester .30-.30 but Benny never knew. It tore a hole in his coat and burst his heart. As his body lies there in the darkening day though it becomes suspended somewhere between liquid and solid. Then the bullet hole grows together as if woven so well by some invisible weaver that it disappears. His coat shivers and wraps itself closely around his metamorphosing body. Faint vertical red stripes begin to appear on his skin. Then horizontal black, camel, and gray ones. Checks. His body merges with his coat or it with him and collapses flat on the lamb’s ears.

The police get a call to investigate a gunshot. They arrive at the woods. It takes awhile to find a path to Benny’s cottage. When they finally find his place they first see the broken-down fence and the lamb’s ears crushed by a plaid coat lying on them. They look around for a body but find none. They check the cottage but it is locked up and nothing seems disturbed. If there was a crime they can’t figure what it might have been and they have other crimes to solve so write a brief report and leave. The crime scene guys show up a couple of hours later and find no evidence at all. There is no body and now the coat that was mentioned in the patrolmen’s report is missing. And the fence not broken. They use a passkey and enter the house. It is smaller inside than outside. There is a living-slash-bedroom, a bathroom and a tiny kitchen. There are no pictures on the wall but on a small desk there is an old yellowing picture of a boy and an older man. The man’s face is mostly hidden by his upraised hand. The boy is looking up at him. The man looks familiar but they can’t recall who it is. They have no idea who the boy is either. Could he be the missing victim? If there is one. Later when they check for who held the title for the house they are surprised to see it is owned by H. L.
