Child regarded Leroux. “That’s gotta kill you.”

Leroux cocked an eyebrow. “What?”

“Hearing your main squeeze talking dirty to a guy like that.”

Leroux gave him a look. “First, if she heard you call her my main squeeze, she’d crush your windpipe. Second, it’s a role she’s playing. Everything she says is for the benefit of those listening in. When she gets home…” He caught himself. “Well, I’m a gentleman.”

Child grinned. “She bangs your brains out? You’re a lucky man.”

Leroux blushed, noticing Tong turning away from the conversation. He felt bad about the situation, her feelings for him still very much intact. They had both recently acknowledged their feelings, and had agreed it couldn’t be, but she was still struggling.

Packman glanced at Child. “Why are you so interested in the boss’ girl? I thought you had a new one of your own.”

“He does!” shouted Marc Therrien from the back of the room. “Princess Leia, wasn’t it?”

Child faced the much older senior analyst. “That was last night. Tonight, we’re playing Cylon and Colonist. She’s Athena. I’m Helo.”

Morrison entered, cutting off the conversation. “Status?”

Child answered before Leroux could. “Our sex lives are good, sir.”

“Pardon me?”

Snorts around the room were the response and Leroux blushed again as he rose. “Let me apologize for that. Jack and Sherrie just had a conversation where she pretended to be his girlfriend.”

Morrison smiled. “Sorry I missed it.”

Leroux wasn’t sure how to take that, so he just continued with his status report. “They’re heading for a rendezvous if he can swing it.”

“Will they let him off the base?”

“I’m not sure. He seemed to think they would. At least we know he’s okay and Sherrie will be there in a couple of hours.”

Morrison joined him at his station, clasping his hands behind his back as he stared at the various feeds. “And still no sign of Pikalov?”

Leroux frowned. “No, he’s gone completely off the grid.”

“Are we sure he’s alive?”

“No. But Valkyrie is modeled after a military organization, so in theory, the next in command would take over and complete whatever mission they’re on.”

Morrison sighed. “And we still have no idea what that is. Washington thinks they might be looking to make another major push from the north. Use Valkyrie to punch a hole through the front lines, fill it with Belarusian troops and then Russian regulars from the divisions building on the border. Combine all that and suddenly you’ve got another major front that forces Ukraine to pull troops from the eastern and southern fronts. It could change the outlook for this war entirely.”

“What the hell are we gonna do?” asked Child, spinning in his chair.

“All we can do is warn the Ukrainians of what might be happening and hope Jack can find out what the plan actually is, and hopefully throw enough monkey wrenches into it that the Ukrainians have a chance to prepare.”

Packman folded his arms, leaning back. “Too bad we can’t just bomb the shit out of the place and put an end to them once and for all.
