Adam initially felt confident about telling his mom. By later that day, though, it all started to fall apart. When he arrived home, he started to practice his monologue again. It’s fine, Adam thought. This is fine. You can do it. She is going to help you. This will make you feel better in the long run.

He walked up to his mom. “Hey, Mom? I have a problem.”

She turned away from the stew she was making and looked at Adam. The second she saw the worry shrouding his face, her expression changed from nonchalance to concern. “What’s the problem, love?”

Adam was about to choke out the words to tell her what had been happening, when the trauma started flooding back to him. He remembered all the times when he had splitting headaches and inexplicable visions. The vivid nightmares came back to him. A tear brushed down his dry face and he ran upstairs before he could share a word.

“Adam! Are you okay?” Adam’s mother began to follow him, trailing behind.

“No,” Adam replied, with more tears running down his face. He ran into his room and locked the door. He heard footsteps outside, which stopped momentarily.

Adam clenched his fist and opened his diary. As a droplet hit the black leather cover of the page numbered 2, he began to write with the ballpoint pen.

Dear Diary,

This is more an open letter to my headaches than my diary, but this is a perfect place for it to be said. I’m done. I’m tired of letting you control my life. I’m tired of you ruining so many moments with my family and friends. So just know that no matter what you do next, it’s ON.
