CHAPTER 25
Giancarlo sat at the piano, staring at the keyboard. What was it, he wondered, that had suddenly called forth the memory of that day more than thirty years ago when he and Giorgio had gone up the mountain? He supposed that it had all come to mind because he had been thinking about his mother while he practiced his scales, just as he had been doing on that long-ago spring morning. Even now, after so many years, he still heard the echoes of her voice, gentle and encouraging, whenever he sat down to play. Sometimes the memory of it was so strong, he heard it so clearly that it was almost as if she were still sitting there beside him on the piano bench. Few of Giancarloâs memories were as strong as that of his motherâs voice, and it had, he knew, the power to evoke many others. And so it came as no surprise to him that one memory had led inescapably to the next, like the fall of the first domino against the second, toppling all the rest in sequence. Dwelling on the past, however, was not a favorite pastime of Giancarloâs. It only made him weary. So, as he always did, he pushed the whole thing from his mind, just as he pushed himself away from the keyboard.
He glanced at the clock. It was late in the afternoon, the Saturday before Labor Day, and he had to get ready to attend a faculty reception on campus that evening. Giancarlo was not looking forward to the affair. In fact, he would have preferred to skip it altogether, for at the moment he was not feeling particularly enthusiastic about the start of the fall semester. Giancarlo was not one of those people who mourned the end of summer. Just the same, he could not help feeling that this one had passed much too quickly. The tired, burned-out feeling about which he had complained back in the spring was still very much with him, though he tried to ignore it. He wondered if perhaps it had been a mistake to not take a week or two off back at the beginning of the summer, to just go someplace to get away from it all. It might have made sense to do so, but looking back, the thought of planning such a getaway had not seemed worth the energy at the time. Besides, he had committed himself to teaching Carter, and every lesson had counted. In any case, it was much too late to worry about it all now, so he trudged off to his bedroom to change his clothes.
