Chapter Fourteen

Velvet black stretched soft and rich overhead, the smattering of diamonds winking their last overture before the sun would draw a curtain on them. Tom stood at the east-facing window of his small rental, mug of hot coffee in hand, and waited for the next act of the cosmos. Sunrise was still a solid hour away, but the early hour was normal for him. Not sleeping, however, was not. Well, hadn’t been, prior to this week.

Scenes from the previous days rolled through his mind, every one of them with Dre. Her shy smile when he’d first seen her again. After years of only ever seeing those blue eyes and that beautiful face in his memory, that little lift of her perfect mouth hit him breathless and nearly put him on his knees. Every moment with her after—even the ones where she was working herself into a headache trying to avoid him—had needled into his heart, fastening her there a little more securely.

She’d breathed a fresh sense of community right into the middle of town. And it was infused with her—determination and kindness, a sense of beauty and love.

She amazed him, and she didn’t even know it.

Kind of like those days back in high school. She’d loved Paul with raw stubbornness, even though her brother was a certified disaster who’d split her heart. Tom knew how it tore her up to see him sent away—thinking that Paul was locked into a life that would forever be chaos, and wanting so much more for him.

Watching her muscle through it that last year had made Tom ache, often kept him up at night, and worse, made him feel entirely useless. Because he had no idea how to help. Even if he did know, by then he was pretty sure she’d reject it from him. If he’d paid more attention before, he’d have been
