I must have fallen asleep eventually, because my alarm wakes me with a start.

I glance out of the window at the pale blue sky. It looks as though it’s going to be another warm day, and I get up, making my way to the bathroom.

I’m on a tight schedule this morning, even though it’s half an hour earlier than when I usually get up. I race through the shower, coming back to the bedroom with a towel wrapped around my hips, and take a few minutes to sort out my clothes.

Despite the heat, I’ll still wear trousers and a shirt, and I roll up the sleeves before laying it on the bed, so they’ll look neater once it’s on.

I’m essentially dry now, and I return to the bathroom to shave and brush my teeth, coming back to get dressed. Making the bed takes no time at all, considering I didn’t use the duvet last night, and once that’s done, I go downstairs and into the kitchen, putting a pod into the coffee machine, and some bread into the toaster.

With one eye on the clock, I eat my breakfast and drink my way through two cups of coffee, hoping I’ve timed this right.

I know when Millie gets to work, but I’ve got absolutely no idea what time she leaves home in the mornings. She may not come straight here. For all I know, she could go for a walk first, or do her shopping. She might even stop at the café for breakfast or a coffee on the way into work. Whatever her routine, I’ve got my fingers crossed I won’t have missed her.

Once I’ve finished, I put my plate and cup into the dishwasher and grab my keys from the table where I left them last night.

It’s still quite early, but that’s fine. I don’t mind waiting, and I leave the house, locking the door behind me, and make my way down Bell Road and out onto the harbour. Most of the shops are still closed… except for the baker’s, and I smile, knowing that at least Rachel will be at home resting, rather than getting up at the crack of dawn like she used to. I’ll check up on her later, just to make sure she’s okay, although I’ll have to fit the visit into my surgery hours, rather than going to see her at lunchtime, as I originally planned. Still, I’m sure I’ve got a couple of slots…

I get to Millie’s flat by seven-thirty, and look up, smiling when I see the window is open at the front. That must mean she’s still there. I think about knocking, but decide against it. I don’t want her to feel like I’m hassling her, so I lean against the wall opposite her door, and I wait…
