And the next time I saw her, I would tell her so.

~Present day~
As soon as I was out the door of the practice rink, I broke into a run. I needed to get out of there before Austin followed me and I had to explain myself to him.
I couldn't believe I had been so stupid. I had let my guard down, and now he knew. He knew it was me, and he knew I'd lied to him.
What was he going to do? Would he say something to the magazine? I didn't know if what I had done was technically misrepresenting myself, but it was a grey area at best. I could almost certainly lose my internship over this, not to mention getting into trouble with the university. And those werenât even the things that worried me the most.
No, what really bothered me was the look on his face when he'd looked back up at me. The hurt and confusion in his eyes, as if I'd betrayed him.
Tears gathered in my eyes, but I blinked them back furiously. How dare he look at me like that after everything that had happened? He was the one who left me behind, not the other way around. If anyone had a right to be bitter and hurt, it was me.
When I finally got away from the rink, through the parking lot and out to the sidewalk, I sat down on the curb and untied my skates, pulling them off and changing into my shoes right there on the pavement. Anybody passing by probably thought I was crazy, but I didn't care.
My hands were shaking badly and all I could think of was that day, the day that my life changed forever.
~Four years earlier~
I tried to open my eyes but the lights were far too bright. I pressed them tighter together instead, hoping that would bring me some relief, but it didn't make much of a difference. My head hurt and my back hurt. In fact, pretty much everything hurt.
