CASE STUDY

Jamie had just turned 8 when she started not feeling well and noticed bruises all over her legs. Her mom brought her to the doctor, who examined her and took some blood from her arm. That night they got a call to go to the hospital immediately. There Jamie had more tests done and was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. Jamie is now 31 years old and works as a librarian at the local library.

Jamie underwent 2 years of treatment. She remembers having many tests and procedures done like spinal taps and receiving chemotherapy during that time. She has mixed memories of the years when she was being treated. She remembers how her mother and father cried when she was first diagnosed. Jamie also remembers the horror in her grandmother’s face when she first learned that Jamie had cancer, and she will never forget it. She has some fond memories of the staff at the hospital who helped her through the difficult times like when her port was not working and when her mouth sores were so bad she could not even swallow water. She thinks of the friends she made at the clinic where she went every week, some survived and some did not.

She finished third grade from home and resumed attending school once her treatment was completed. She needed tutors and extra help because she struggled with school work after her diagnosis. Although it required extra time and effort, Jamie graduated both high school and college; it took her longer but she reached her goal. She married her college sweetheart. They have been together for 5 years.

Jamie’s parents were divorced a few years after she finished treatment; she blames her cancer for this. She believes the strain of having a sick child was hard for them and their married life suffered. Jamie thinks she would like to have children but the thought scares her. She is not sure if she is able to get pregnant since she has never had a regular menstrual cycle and she also has mild cardiomyopathy. Jamie knows that her past treatments can affect her health and that there is possibility that she could develop a secondary malignancy.
