WHAT ABOUT INTEGRATIVE AND HERBAL MEDICINES?

Recently, there has been a great surge in the field of integrative medicine. This is evident in the medical and mental health fields that are expanding their scope of practice to further help people prevent illness, recover, and get well. The best of traditional, herbal, and other fields of health care are now considered to meet mental, emotional, and relational needs. As a result in expanding this view of whole-person health, some profoundly biblical and practical living resources are being emphasized in current health trends.

We now have solid scientific evidence of the benefits of living a healthy lifestyle that includes exercise, adequate sleep, good nutrition, healthy connections, and even prayer. They provide recovery from stress, optimism, hope, and meaningful connections. And remarkably, these findings are profound truths based on Judeo-Christian values and principles for living, such as: Let your medicine be your food and your food your medicine. A merry heart is like medicine. Prayer provides peace in your heart and mind. There are even benefits to having pets, listening to music, and smelling certain herbs (aromatherapy). We will explore many of these in the next few chapters.

Likewise, there has been interest to find other alternative “natural” substances that can alleviate depression and anxiety. Health-food stores are growing across the country, providing a plethora of natural remedies to every malady possible. Although some of these are viewed to be equivalent to old-fashioned “snake oil,” there is increasing research evidence that some of these natural herbs and neutraceuticals are worth considering.

There is no question that God did create many herbs and plants for our healing benefit. That is not the problem. It is in how we use these in treating children and teens that we want to caution you to. Here are a few important issues to consider.
