Fibre

Studies show that ingesting fibre is important for healthy microbiota as this can protect against inflammation. The type of diet we have in the West, where foods are stored and processed, leads to a diet low in fibre. It is important to get enough fibre, not just to protect against IBS symptoms, but to reduce the likelihood of inflammation and ensure the microbiota are as diverse as possible as this helps in immune function. However, there are two types of fibre and it’s important if you have IBS to know the distinction – soluble and insoluble. Soluble fibre dissolves in water and forms a gel-like substance which slows digestion and the rate at which we empty our stomach, whereas insoluble fibre has a laxative effect.
